This site has been collecting measurements one category at a time, and the same shape keeps appearing. The gap between a worn component and a fresh one is larger — usually much larger — than the gap between the products you could replace it with.
Five categories, two complete comparisons
Start with the weakness, because it is the interesting part. Of the 5 categories here with independent measurement, only 2 have had both gaps measured. In the other 3, somebody measured what condition costs you and nobody measured whether the brand matters at all.
That is not a gap in this page. It is a gap in the evidence the whole industry sells against — three categories where products are marketed on brand and the brand difference has never been put on a bench.

Both cases are already on this site with their sources attached; follow the links for the conditions each figure was measured under. The ratios are arithmetic on those published numbers. Two cases is two cases — this is a pattern worth acting on, not a law.
The three where nobody measured the other half

Headlights
An eleven-year-old lens measured 22% of a new one — a 78-point gap, on two vehicles in a 2018 study
Product gap: No independent test compares restoration kits or aftermarket lenses against each other. The method has been measured; the products have not.

Product gap: Consumer Reports tests 150 a year and states outright that the variation between years and sizes makes it impossible to recommend by brand or model.

Product gap: What was measured is filter AREA, not brand: 2.2× the area gave better filtration and lower pressure drop at once. No brand comparison exists.
The battery case is the sharpest. A laboratory that buys and tests 150 batteries a year, five of every model, concluded that it could not make a brand recommendation. That is not a failure of the test; it is the result. Meanwhile the difference between a battery in Minnesota and the same battery in Arizona is well over a year of life.
The case where the order flips
Brake fluid is the case where the two gaps are closest — 1.4× rather than 5.9× — and it is still the most decisive, because the ordering inverts. Federal minimums put the worst fresh fluid (DOT 3, 205 °C) above the best moisture-laden one (DOT 5, 180 °C).
Every fresh grade outperforms every wet grade. There is no amount of money you can spend on brake fluid that beats changing the brake fluid. That is the argument on this page in one line, and it is the only category where the measurements make it literally true rather than merely likely.
What this argument is not
- It is not an argument for buying cheap. Where a product gap has been measured it is real — 6.1 points and 55 °C are not nothing. The claim is about which decision to make first, not about ignoring the second.
- It does not cover safety-critical fitment. Performance summer tyres are the counterexample this site has already published: seven metres of wet braking between eight new tyres. Where the product spread is enormous, it is enormous, and no maintenance argument touches it.
- Two cases is two cases. The heading is a pattern across the measured evidence available to us, not a law of physics. If a category turns up where a fresh worst-in-class loses to a worn best-in-class, it belongs on this page, and we will put it here.
- The cheapest version of this argument is not on the list above at all. Reading your manual's own oil interval rather than a windscreen sticker changes nothing about what you buy and can remove twenty oil changes over 100,000 miles.
- We are paid on the second decision, not the first. Changing your brake fluid on schedule earns this site nothing. We are saying it anyway, and you should weigh every recommendation here knowing which way our incentive points. How this site makes money.
derived No new measurement appears on this page. Every figure is taken from another page on this site, each of which names the laboratory or regulation it came from and the conditions it was measured under. The ratios are ours. The page fails to build if a case is ever added whose condition gap does not exceed its product gap.
use it Consumer Reports, How Hot Weather Affects Your Car Battery and What to Do About It, June 2026. Consumer Reports states it tests 150 batteries a year including five examples of every rated model, and that its life score comes from repeatedly discharging and recharging above 167 F for 15 weeks or until performance falls to unacceptable levels, simulating engine-bay heat. The regional service-life figures quoted on this page are AAA's, reported by CR, and come from AAA's own service data rather than from a laboratory. The per-battery ratings themselves are behind CR's membership wall and we have not seen them, so no battery is ranked here.
use it MotorTrend, Best Wiper Blades for 2026: Tested Picks for Every Driver, April 2026. One truck, a Ford F-150 Lightning, and one wiper size. Coverage was measured by rolling an even coat of washable paint over the windshield, leaving it 30 seconds, running a single back-and-forth pass, photographing the result and counting cleared against uncleared pixels in Photoshop. Noise was read with a sound level meter on a dry windshield, and installation was timed. The paint is a repeatable proxy for rain rather than rain itself, and the durability comparison the authors describe as still running is not part of these figures. Crucially, the lowest-scoring set is the OLD CONTROL -- the blades already on the truck for a few years -- and not a new product.
the rule US Code of Federal Regulations, 49 CFR 571.116, Standard No. 116: Motor vehicle brake fluids, current text, read August 2026. Federal law, not a product claim. S5.1.1 sets the minimum equilibrium reflux boiling point each DOT grade must reach when 60 ml of fluid is refluxed under specified conditions (S6.1), and a second minimum after the fluid has been through the humidification procedure in S6.2 -- the wet figure. S5.2 requires the container to be labelled with the minimum WET boiling point in Fahrenheit. The figures below are the legal floors every fluid of that grade must clear; an individual product may exceed them and its own label is what tells you by how much.
use it AAA, AAA Illuminates the Dangers of Driving with Cloudy Headlights, December 2018. An accredited testing laboratory measured headlight assemblies from two popular sedans of about eleven years of age, driver's-side units, against new ones, to FMVSS-108 with no modification to the assemblies or the procedure. Output was measured again after replacement with original-equipment parts, after replacement with aftermarket parts, and after both professional and DIY restoration. Two vehicles is a small sample and the study is from 2018; the figures are the ones AAA published.

Twenty-two vehicle cabin air filters measured for filtration efficiency, pressure drop at an air velocity of 2.5 m/s, and dust-holding capacity, plus modelled service life across 31 major Chinese cities. The filters are those sold in the Chinese market and the service-life hours are specific to those cities' air, so the physics and the ranking travel but the absolute hours do not.
